Editorial comment on this plate:
The charming child picture which adorns this issue of The Photographic Times is from a negative by O. Pierre Havens of Jacksonville, Florida, author of “Babyhood” in “The American Annual of Photography and Photographic Times Almanac for 1890,” and many other child pictures which have been universally admired.
“Tick! Tick!” shows not only the skillful photographer, but evinces the peculiar ability of an artist to pose and manage a difficult subject. Nothing could be more natural or graceful than the little girl here depicted. The watch serves the double purpose of giving point to the picture while it interests and controls the vivacious subject. This happy thought reveals an ability which is of great value to the portrait photographer—an understanding of children and a love for them that makes it possible to easily manage and control. Mr. Havens not only secures a good and characteristic likeness of his subject, but makes a picture at the same time. Our professional readers will be especially interested in this successful example of child portraiture, and all will enjoy the pretty picture for its own sake.
The reproduction was made by the Photo-Gravure Company, in gelatine, in a manner that perfectly preserves all the excellent qualities of the original negative.
Commercial photographer O. Pierre Havens (1838-1912) maintained his studio in Jacksonville, Florida since 1888 but also opened a summer gallery in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1890.
